Made famous by it’s fury little native marsupial, the quokka, Rottnest Island was a must-see on our travel list. We were heading down the scenic Swan River from Perth on the Rottnest Express to explore the island gem off the Western Australia coast. Known by the locals as ‘Rotto’, it won’t be long until you realise that there’s more to the island than the quokkas. With bike hire included in our day trip, we set off to explore the island on our own.
This island makes you want to explore and swim in every beach on the map but even though the island seems quite small you will need more than a day to achieve that. Some of the highlights include Bathurst Lighthouse, Pinky Beach, The Basin, Geordie Bay and Longreach Bay to the north of the island. Salmon Beach and Little Salmon Beach to the south. Cathedral Rocks to the west that has a seal viewing platform. Wadjemup Lighthouse and The Settlement where you’ll find shops, restaurants and the most amount of quokkas we found on the day.
