Cesky Krumlov and Salzburg

This part left us with mixed feelings. We were both happy, that we would soon be flying home to see our puppy dog Jak, our family, our comfortable bed, to unpack and shower and not live out of a suitcase. And sad, that our adventures had finally come to an end. Sad that we had actually reached this point of our 6 month trip travelling overseas – where did the time go?

Leaving Prague, we were back on busabout using our flexi pass to the beautiful quaint town of Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. We opted out of the accommodation that busabout recommended, due to the rude service we received when trying to change our original booking. With a further walk, we stayed at Krumlov House Hostel, a beautiful little cottage right on the banks of the river that wound around the city.

A Unesco world heritage site, Cesky Krumlov is well known for the Old Town crowned by the beautiful Cesky Castle & the Vltava river. We walked all around the cobblestone town, feeling like we were in the scene of a medieval movie. Exploring the castle complex, it provided us with beautiful views over the town below & even had bears to guard the castle walls. We visited the local markets eyeing out the produce before Wade had a go at shooting a crossbow & arrow.

There are two restaurants you MUST try whilst in Cesky Krumlov. The first being Krčma v Šatlavské; A medieval style tavern with a unique atmosphere. The meat is grilled on an open fire which can be viewed from your seat. It really feels like you are back in medieval times! Lots of meat including pork knuckle is on the menu with minimal vegetables and of course, beautiful local beer! There is no shortage of meat when it comes to eastern europe and the prices are reasonable!

It was also recommended to us to check out the only Vegetarian restaurant in the town – Laibon; friendly staff, the restaurant is located on the river banks with outdoor seating so you can enjoy the lovely view. We enjoyed a beautiful mix platter including soybean steaks.. Is it bad it tasted just like beef? We spent the afternoon gazing at the river flow by, watching people manoeuvre their river rafts.

Back on busabout, we were headed to Vienna but unfortunately only had a 1 night stopover as we had changed our itinerary to include Italy. After a good nights rest, we were headed to Austria! We arrived in Grunau im Almtal, which is one of Busabouts optional stops along their hop on hop off route. This village was absolutely beautiful with the most stunning scenery – It would have been nice to spend more time here! We enjoyed lunch that the hostel put on for us before picking up passengers and heading on our way to Salzburg!

As we arrived into Salzburg, our Busabout guide put on the track to the sound of music to set the scene. I would of prefered to hear Mozart play! Salzburg is such a beautiful little city with a great street vibe and atmosphere as people enjoyed the sunshine whilst lying on the river banks.

Unfortunately Wade was hit with a horrible fever for most of the 3 days we had in Salzburg, but we still managed to explore the city, walking along the Salzach riverbanks towards the Hohensalzburg Castle / Salzburg Fortress. We took the cable car to the top for a wonder & to marvel at the views below. We explored the old town and saw Mozarts birthplace and residence. We walked around the beautiful city and its cute streets before stopping at a nearby cafe for the best Austrian schnitzel – Chicken with cranberry sauce & lemon YUM! So good that we ate there twice!

Our last destination of our Busabout loop & travels around the world was Munich, arriving at 6:00pm. This was actually our third time visiting Munich yet we have always had limited time in the city, only ever having one day spare to explore the main street, Neuhauser Strasse including Marienplatz, the Glockenspiel, the water fountain & Hofbrauhaus, a Bavarian beer house where we drank litre beers & meaty meals! Unfortunately, we didn’t have spare time this round either as we caught our train to the airport for our flight home – until next time Europe!
