We booked a half-day trip with tour company Viator, leaving Amsterdam behind to explore the surrounding Dutch countryside with plenty of commentary about the history, culture and sights of the Netherlands.

We met in central Amsterdam, finding out that majority of the Netherlands is below sea level. We visited the fishing village of Volendam, a beautiful little town where we stopped for a seafood lunch before taking a 20 minute ferry ride across to the town of Marken. Exploring this traditional fishing town, we watched cheese being made the traditional way and a shoemaker making clogs at the wooden shoe factory, Klompenmarkerij!

Our last stop of the tour was Zaanse Schans, best known for its massive windmills and where we climbed up and down each one whilst marvelling them.
